Les Mills International
Les Mills licenses group fitness programmes like BODYPUMP to more than 22,000 clubs across 110 countries, built by the Mills family from a single Auckland gym.
Les Mills International is a group fitness company that licenses choreographed exercise programmes to gyms worldwide. The first Les Mills gym opened in Auckland in 1968, founded by four-time Olympian and champion shot-putter Les Mills. The global business was built by his son Phillip Mills from 1997, around the insight that you don't have to own the gyms yourself.
Les Mills programmes, including BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT and RPM, are now taught by roughly 100,000 certified instructors in more than 22,000 clubs across 110 countries. The family never sold and never tried to own the footprint; they franchised the system.
Why Noteworthy
Les Mills is one of New Zealand's most successful global franchise models. The family found a third way out of a small market: instead of selling to a multinational or trying to build every gym themselves, they licensed the method and let others build it for them.
