An award-winning leader, Mike Bennetts began his career in the oil industry at Europa in the early 1980s. Europa was an independent entity in New Zealand at the time, although BP owned it. Bennetts dropped out of Auckland University, where he studied law, to join Europa’s sales team. BP recognised his potential, and he later joined their group of 150 staff identified for their executive potential.

Bennetts worked for BP in various roles, including in South Africa. Following an 18-month training programme in London, he was appointed as the chief executive of BP’s Integrated Supply and Trading business unit in the Eastern Hemisphere. This role was based in Singapore and managed a business unit with an annual revenue of US$40 billion, employing 500 staff from 25 nationalities across nine offices.

Bennetts played a crucial role in handling the aftermath of a significant trading loss by China Aviation Oil during his time in Singapore. In 2010, he returned to New Zealand to become the founding CEO of Z Energy. This company emerged from the assets of Shell New Zealand and Chevron New Zealand. Under his leadership, Z Energy made significant strides in the fuel distribution sector in New Zealand. Bennetts led the company through various transformations, including acquiring Chevron New Zealand in June 2015, which increased Z Energy’s market share in New Zealand to 49%.

Bennetts’ leadership style is described as inclusive and well-respected. He has been instrumental in shaping Z Energy’s distinctive brand and culture. Bennetts embraces failure as a necessary step towards success, encouraging experimentation and learning from setbacks. His emphasis on accountability and continuous learning has been a cornerstone of his leadership philosophy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Mike Bennetts faced tough decisions regarding dividends and staff bonuses. He prioritised the company’s financial stability, highlighting his focus on long-term sustainability over short-term gains. After a successful tenure at Z Energy, Bennetts stepped down as CEO in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of courageous and ambitious leadership. His journey from a budding law student to a globally recognised business leader in the energy sector is a testament to his adaptability, vision, and commitment to excellence.
